Low Sulphur IMO 2020 Regulation

The maritime industry is facing great changes entailing a radical transformation to remain fully compliant with latest IMO requirements. Vessels may only use marine fuel (LSFO) with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5 percent, as opposed to the current capping of 3.5 percent from January 2020.

The IMO 2020 regulation is so far the largest in a series of International Maritime Organization (IMO) measures to reduce marine pollution. Using low sulphur fuel oil will be the key as most environmentally friendly short term solution for the shipping industry to remain compliant.

The Shipping Lines will be introducing an Environmental Fuel Fee (EFF) effective 1 December 2019 to cover the increase in fuel-related costs associated to the implementation of the IMO 2020 regulation. The EFF tariffs have been calculated using the price difference between high sulphur fuel and low sulphur fuel. . The difference calculated is 193,08 USD/ton so it will have impact the shipping costs which you need to take into account when doing your costings
